Deere Stock: Look Beyond the US Turf

Deere’s growth story is powerful but its direct impact on JSE investors is limited; rand moves and local industrials offer better exposure.

Deere & Company has weathered the industrial slowdown impressively, finding new pockets of growth, especially in precision agriculture and tech-driven machinery. For global investors, that’s promising. But South African investors face a dilemma: Deere isn't listed locally, and the rand often swings sharply against the dollar. This FX volatility can erode offshore gains. More importantly, if you want genuine exposure to industrial innovation, JSE companies like Barloworld—Deere’s local dealer—and Motus offer hands-on access to industrial and automotive demand in South Africa. Their performance will better reflect local economic conditions than Deere shares hedged through USD/ZAR moves. That said, if the rand strengthens significantly, holding offshore growers like Deere could add portfolio diversification benefits. But given persistent rand weakness risks and local economy uncertainties, I’d watch Deere from the sidelines for now. this is just our opinion and not financial advice

How I would invest

Avoid buying Deere directly due to FX risks and lack of local listing. Instead, consider selective exposure via Barloworld or Motus for local industrial growth plays.

What I would watch
  • Barloworld
  • Motus
  • USD/ZAR
What could go wrong
  • sharper rand weakness
  • global industrial cycle disruption
