Axe Cap view

RingCentral Rides AI Wave, But What About the Rand?

RingCentral’s recent earnings showed strong growth and AI adoption, yet South African investors should focus on USD/ZAR dynamics before jumping in.

RingCentral’s 5.9% revenue boost and doubling of AI-related revenue signal solid growth in cloud communications. Their improved margins and free cash flow hint at a maturing business, which is often rare for tech firms still chasing scale. Yet, for South African investors, RingCentral remains a US story priced in dollars. The real question is how the rand moves against the dollar. If USD/ZAR spikes higher, your local returns could take a hit despite the stock’s gains. Today’s rand is vulnerable to global dollar strength and domestic risks, including rising fuel costs and electricity challenges. Among JSE names, tech exposure is largely through Prosus and Naspers, whose fortunes tilt with the same external forces but carry additional emerging market risk. RingCentral is worth watching, but patience may pay off better waiting for a more rand-friendly entry point. this is just our opinion and not financial advice

How I would invest

Wait for a weaker USD/ZAR before considering US-based tech like RingCentral. Meanwhile, trim large rand-hedged tech exposure in Prosus when local risks rise.

What I would watch
  • RNG
  • USD/ZAR
  • Prosus
What could go wrong
  • Strengthening USD pushing USD/ZAR higher
  • Local inflation and power supply instability hitting rand sentiment
How strongly I feel

6/10

RingCentral stock rose 5% after raising its full-year free cash flow forecast. The communications software provider reported Q3 revenue growth of 5.9% and highlighted AI as a major growth opportunity, with AI product customers now representing over $400 million in annual recurring revenue and doubling year-over-year. The company also improved profitability with adjusted operating margins increasing to 24.7% and free cash flow rising 21% to $157 million.
