Alphabet Just Delivered 82% Cloud Growth. Why It Wasn't Enough

Alphabet's Cloud Boom Overshadowed by AI Spending Surge
Alphabet's strong cloud growth growth masks investor worries over its enormous capital expenditure plans.
Alphabet’s Q2 performance looks impressive on paper: 82% cloud revenue growth and 24% overall top-line gains. But the market’s reaction tells a different story. The company’s plan to nearly double its annual capital spending to about $200 billion—mostly on AI infrastructure—has spooked investors. They’re concerned that pouring cash into AI data centers will drain free cash flow, which turned negative for the first time. For us on the JSE, this means watching the rand (USD/ZAR) closely since heavy US tech capex can weigh on the dollar and ripple through emerging markets. South African tech counters like Naspers and Prosus, with their exposures to global internet trends, face pressure if global tech spending stumbles. The key takeaway is that fast growth isn’t always enough when it comes with big cash burn. If Alphabet’s AI bets pay off, its shares may rebound, but if investor patience runs short, these risks could persist longer. this is just my opinion and not financial advice
Avoid buying Naspers and Prosus for now given global tech jitters and watch USD/ZAR for signs of dollar strength that would hurt rand-denominated assets. Consider trimming exposure to global tech-linked names until spending shows results.
- USD/ZAR
- Naspers
- Prosus
- AI infrastructure investments fail to generate expected returns
- Strengthening US dollar putting further pressure on the rand and SA tech counters
7/10
Alphabet reported strong Q2 earnings with 82% Google Cloud revenue growth to $24.8B and overall revenue up 24% to $119.8B. However, the stock fell after-hours as investors focused on the company's massive capital expenditure increase of $15B to $195-205B annually. Alphabet reported negative free cash flow of $5.8B for the first time as a public company, with expectations for continued negative FCF due to AI infrastructure spending.
